nTED Analysis
Evaluation Of Drills In Disaster Control

nTED Analysis

Nobody likes to think about disasters – but disaster control staff must be prepared: plans for any conceivable incident need to be designed and tested regularly. Drills ensure an adequate response in cases of emergency. These checks are complex: firefighters, policemen, rescue services, hospitals, THW and other organisations – hundreds of partners work hand in hand.

We have developed a system to evaluate major incidents for the institute for rescue engineering and hazard prevention (IRG) at the Technische Hochschule Köln, in which hardware and software work together – even under adverse conditions.

Tablet-based & Always Prepared

Incidents like medical treatments or transportation can be recorded and tracked via the tablet-based analysis app. Data is transferred, analysed and visualised in a system in real time

The web based Android app can be installed on the tablets of participants of drills. Since these exercises often take place in remote areas without access to mobile network, the app uses a mobile server who creates its own wifi to synchronise. The Web app permits configurations and analysis. This makes nTED a fully autonomous integrated system.

nTED Case – An Autonomous System

Unlike other projects, nTED also includes a hardware component: The nTED case. It is usually configured as one comprehensive system (one case corresponds to 30-50 tablets), participants don’t need cellphones. The nTED case consists of three components:

  • An app on the handy Android tablets, which are included
  • A web app to configure the drill and the corresponding evaluation
  • The case is server and mobile wifi hotspot in one

nTED Trial – The MANV Drill In Cologne

The MANV drill 2015 in Cologne marked a major milestone for nTED. During a drill for an incident with mass casualties (MANV), a high number of injured persons had to be tended to. nTED withstood the challenging drill. Since then, we keep refining and advancing the system, it is available at ours.
