We have always been enthusiastic users of Call-A-Bike, a bike hire system run by Deutsche Bahn subsidiary  DB Rent. And we have been enthusiastic iPhone users from the beginning. Unfortunately back then there was no Call-A-Bike app. So we developed it ourselves. And we further optimised the app after selling it to DB Rent – and it's available as a wrist app, too.

THE DYI COMPANY

Our impetus: As Call-A-Bike users, at the beginning we missed app for the iPhone to find available bikes in the neighbourhood. So we took initiative: Most of the relevant data were on the DB website. So we could develop the app according to our ideas.

In 2009 we released the first version in the App Store under the name "Find a Bike". Soon DB Rent made contact with us and consequently took over the app. Since then we have been developing the Call-A-Bike app together - also for Android and Apple Watch.

FEATURES THAT DO NOT ONLY CONVINCE US

  • Users can register directly via the app
  • Available bicycles are automatically displayed at the current or a selected location - including distance information
  • Booking and returning is possible via the app - without a booking call
  • Interactive icons mark the positions of the bicycles on the map
  • All known routing functions of the navigation app are available
  • The app works in all Call-A-Bike cities and systems, whether with or without stations (ICE railway stations, Call-A-Bike fixes)
  • Damages can be reported directly via the app
  • Saving of multiple accounts for business or private use

THE TANDEM OF DEVELOPMENT WITH
DB-RENT RIDES ON AND ON AND ON

The (further) development process: Since the beginning of the project we have been steadily working on advancing and improving the app. Groundwork is an agile development process, based on SCRUM. Our developers and the DB Rent product management form a powerful and well-established team. The outcome of a two-week development cycle is always a finished version with new functions or improvements.

BECAUSE CYCLISTS LIKE TO KEEP UP WITH THE TIMES

Apple Watch App: Location search, direct entering of the bike number or viewing an active booking – we have developed an app for the Apple Watch, that makes the most important functions of the iPhone app also work on your wrist. Users can also rent a bicycle via Siri voice input. The location search is linked to AppleMaps - so you know in no time, where the next bicycle can be found.
